To Infinity and Beyond!

August is filled with MANY birthdays in our family, and the first day of school is no exception. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A SPECIAL LITTLE MAMA!! Every year she likes to have a theme for her birthday party, and one theme that was fun for the whole family was her Toy Story 3 party. She requested that everyone dress up like a character from the movie, and my cousin and her family definitely didn't disappoint!

I didn't get a chance to put together a costume, but I came with desserts in hand. I made cake pops in the shape of Hamm's head. I got the tags you see on the cake pop sticks here. My cousin's girlfriend is pretty darn creative as well when it comes to baking! She created the awesome Toy Story inspired cupcakes: an etch-a-sketch, Jessie's hat, toy soldier, little alien, and Hamm. A little icing, candy, and marshmallows go a long way!
A kid's party isn't complete without party games! My cousin got pretty creative I think. The first game that the kids played was similar to a scene from the movie where the toys were navigating around town from under a cardboard box. For this game the kids were divided into 2  teams and each of them had to take a turn to go through the zig-zag obstacle course of orange cones and back. The first team to have all their teammates complete the course first won! This game was definitely a little funny to watch, and the kids had a ball.

The next game mimicked how the toy soldiers are always climbing up the walls to do missions. We took an old check book box and placed a toy soldier on the right and left end of the box, and there was also a piece of string on each side of the box as well. The object of the game was to work in a team of 2 people and pull the toy soldiers up the banister first using the string without the toy solider falling off. If the toy soldier fell off you have to reset and start over. Easier said than done! Each kid had to hold a string and you had to evenly pull up the string or else the box tilted and the toy soldiers fell. To make it fair, 1 big kid was paired up with 1 little kid. It was definitely a creative game, and the bigger kids enjoyed this game a little more than the little kids due to the technicality of it all.

We finished off the party with some cake and presents, then swam for the rest of the night. All in all a simple yet super fun themed party! Can't wait to see what theme Little Mama requests next year!

Cowabunga Dude!

I received a few messages about JAM's ninja turtle themed 5th birthday party so I thought I'd share the details. It was a big milestone birthday so I kind of went all out. I tried to research places to have an on-location birthday party, but many places were charging $200-$300 for an hour, which included pizza and playtime. The other catch was you had to have a minimum of about 10 kids and honestly, since his birthday was right before his kindergarten year, we didn't even know 10 kids to invite. Plus, I didn't like the limitation of 1 hour and just pizza. Thankfully, my aunt was nice enough to let me throw his birthday party at her house so it could be a pool party!

Instead of throwing a bunch of TMNT memorabilia around the house I thought I'd incorporate the colors of the ninja turtles and a few ninja turtle accents hear and there instead.

First off, the invitations. In this day and age, many people are technology savvy so I decided to send the invitations over the internet instead of through the post office. It allowed me to be a little more creative and invite as many people as I wanted. The best part, IT WAS FREE! I used the services of my favorite online invitation website Punchbowl.

You can't have a ninja turtle party without pizza! It's their signature dish! Coming from Chicago we're all about the pizza, but in Vegas, our choices are fairly limited. We decided to go with Rosati's pizza to have a little taste of home. We also had Filipino and American dishes to fill out food table as well. Since it was a summer birthday party we had tons of bottled water to drink as well and pop (or soda for you non-midwesterners lol) and Capri sun. When the party first started out, I let the guests go swimming until all the other guests arrived. Once I knew everyone was there it was time to get the party started!

I gathered all the kids and asked them if they knew the story about the ninja turtles and how they became ninjas. Some of them actually knew that it was because of the ooze and I told them that I had the same green ooze to transform them too if they were willing. Of course everyone was up for it! My green ooze was green Hawaiian punch and I just ripped off the label and decorated the bottle with streamers hehe. I poured some of the punch into a little cup for each of them and they all drank it together. I started to hype them up a bit and asked them if they started to feel the change and they all agreed. I told them to run into the neighboring room so that their parents didn't watch them transform.

This is where I had the costumes I bought them. I bought a bunch of green tees from walmart for about $2 each and saved the receipts to return any extras. Also in Walmart, I bought brown felt fabric and colored fabric to cut out strips for the belt and headbands, which all cost about $5 total. I told the kids that I had uniforms for them now that they transformed so I dressed them up and sent them out one at a time so their parents could take pictures of them.

Once they were all dressed I sent them the another area when my nephew acted as a Master and tested them to see if they were really ninjas. He had them do a few karate exercises while I set up the games. I also provided foam swords that I purchased from Target's dollar spot for the exercises.

I set up a game that was similar to pin the tail on the donkey, but it was called "pin the mask on Leonardo". I just drew Leonardo's head on a poster board and cut out masks out of poster board as well. I then used double stick tape to stick them on. Silly me, I was so sleep deprived (I didn't sleep at all actually the night before) that I was spinning the kids for this game but I didn't start them off far away to walk to the poster and put on the mask. I had them within arms reach. I was wondering why all the kids were so good at the game! haha.

The next game I played was a ninja star toss. I had poster boards decorated like TMNT sewer covers and split the kids into 2 teams. I had my nephew make ninja stars out of paper and gave each team 5 stars. They had to take turns and the first team to get all 5 stars on the poster board won. This was actually a little harder than I expected. Surprisingly the little kids got the hang of it pretty easily though and won all the points for their teams.

I had prizes for all the kids in a prize bucket I bought in the Target dollar spot. All the kids got a prize so no one felt left out. I handed out the goodie bags and let them use it to collect their candy when we did the piñata. After that, we headed to the kitchen and sang "Happy Birthday" on the cake and cupcakes that I made for the party, and finished off by opening presents. I made the cake with a simple round cake pan. I just cut out an upside down U at the top, cut that piece in half, and rotated it back to back to make the sting part of his mask. I iced it and voilà! I ordered the TMNT cupcake rings off of ebay for super cheap, which they kept as a souvenir. The kids spent the rest of the day swimming and as souvenirs they got to keep everything they received throughout the day: TMNT costume I dressed them in (shirt, belt & mask), foam swords, goodie bags, and cupcake rings. Everyone had a blast and it was a party to remember.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG BOY!!!

6 years ago today I gave birth to a teeny 5 lb. 4 oz little boy who is the most handsome, most intelligent, funniest, sweetest, friendliest, caring, most awesome son in the world. I'm not that old, but having him turn 6 surely makes me feel a little old haha.
I swear JAM went from toddler to little man overnight!
When we went all out for his 5th birthday, and threw his a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle party I thought that was going to be the game-changing year where I felt like he wasn't so little anymore. For some reason it feels like 6 years old is that year though. I think it's because he went through the whole Kindergarten thing and know he's actually starting the number grades. He became so much more independent over the summer and he's getting taller. *sigh* I always say it's so weird to be on this side of the fence. Being the parent. Watching your kids grow. I think I'm going to be a wreck from this birthday on haha.
It makes me sad sometimes to watch you grow so quickly before my eyes, but I love watching you grow into the amazing little man you are. I'm so proud of everything you've done in these short 6 years and I'm honored to call you my son! HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY JAM!! Mommy and Daddy love you more than you'll ever know. ♥

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!

I just celebrated my 24th birthday on July 28th (yay me! hehe) and it was one of the best birthdays yet! After my 21st birthday I feel like I'd rather spend quality time with my family for my birthday than be out and about at the clubs and bars with a bunch of randoms. So, spending quality time with JAM and Mahal is exactly what I did and it was PERFECT!

I couldn't stop laughing at JAM's card for me!
We did an early birthday dinner the night before at one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Vegas. The food was to my liking as usual.

We got home a couple minutes before midnight (we always countdown our birthdays). A tradition that started 6 years ago between Mahal and I is giving each other a ding dong supcake with a candle in it at midnight on our birthday. I was in the hospital, pregnant and on bed rest on the eve of my 18th birthday. My hospital was in the middle of downtown Chicago so there was nowhere for Juan to pick up a cake for me, and he knew my family wasn't coming to visit until late at night since my mom worked late. So, he made a run to the nearest store and picked up a ding dong cupcake and a candle then presented it to me at midnight on my first bday together with him. The tradition just stuck through the years and it's something that I always look forward to. This year, however, I got DOUBLE the love and I wouldn't have it any other way <3. JAM wanted in on the tradition and came out with daddy to give me a ding dong cupcake too! I absolutely LOVED it!

We started off my birthday with breakfast in bed. They know how much I love pancakes so that's what they made me. We got ready and headed to a couple malls and stores to do a little shopping and pampering. The one thing I definitely wanted to do on my birthday was visit this new ice cream sandwich shop that just opened about two weeks ago called Sweet Addiction. Boy! was it everything I ever dreamed of and more! They specialize in ice cream sandwiches where you get to choose whatever two cookies you want and whatever ice cream you want to make the sandwich, but you can also order both the ice cream or cookies individually. It was heaven in my mouth! No exaggeration! They use the old school thrifty ice cream and it's probably the best ice cream I've ever eaten in my life! I can't wait for family to come into town so I can take them! Another reason to love it, the owners are super friendly and it's affordable! Mahal got an ice cream sandwich and it was only $3! I got 3 scoops of my 3 favorite flavors (cotton candy, birthday cake, and bubble gum) for only $3.50, and JAM got a scoop of ice cream on a cone for only $1.50! If you're ever in Vegas, definitely stop by Sweet Addiction and thank me later.

After that we headed to Fashion Show Mall on the Strip to do a little more shopping and ended our night with a nice dinner at Applebee's. It definitely was a great day with the men of my life. They catered to me all day and JAM behaved the whole time, which was awesome. Thank you Lord for another great year of life, and I'm excited to see what you have in store for me in the future. I'm so blessed with awesome friends and family, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I would also like to thank all of you who take the time to read my blog! I see an increase in the level of support every day and I appreciate you all! We just have to keep taking it day by day and together, we can accomplish anything!
